Beams: Autoprogettazione Generator

exploration

Beams explores the tension between user desires and their ability to make design choices. It sheds light on the gap between what designers think people want, what people think they want, and what people actually want. Inspired by Enzo Mari’s Autoprogettazione, the project defines parametric plans for a stool, bench, chair, or sofa. The furniture is shaped by direct user input and construction plans are printed on a receipt. It asks how design could shift if we are capable of listening to individuals rather than markets, and whether a return to a digital cottage industry is actually desirable. In making this, I’ve reflected on the weight of my choices as a designer. Both the freedoms they grant and the limitations they set.
