Beams: Autoprogettazione Generator

04/2025
exploration

Beams explores the tension between user desires and their ability to make design choices. It sheds light on the gap between what designers think people want, what people think they want, and what people actually want. Inspired by Enzo Mari’s Autoprogettazione, the project defines parametric plans for a stool, bench, chair, or sofa. The furniture is shaped by direct user input and construction plans are printed on a receipt. It asks how design could shift if we are capable of listening to individuals rather than markets, and whether a return to a digital cottage industry is actually desirable. In making this, I’ve reflected on the weight of my choices as a designer. Both the freedoms they grant and the limitations they set.

Trotman

07/2024
via Smith Optics/Cinco Design

This project explores a new product opportunity for Smith Optics that aligns the brand with a vision of sport that leans thoughtful and intentional, rather than adrenaline-driven. The concept synthesizes Smith’s identity beyond high-performance moments to be inclusive of values such as awareness and mental clarity. It leverages Smith’s technical strengths to build a pair of eyewear for athletes in the growing cultural shift toward meaning in sport. Presented to the Smith team, this concept offers a foundation for future innovation rooted in the sport run/fish.
